Winter Woes

As I applied my makeup this morning, I realised that I felt and looked pale, dry and decidedly... Wintery! So here are a few hints to brighten up your face and beauty in the dark days of winter.

1. Go for Colour rather than Bronzer: We are tempted to hold on the that tanned summer glow, but choosing a blush colour that livens the completion is far more effective. Try using a strong pigmented cream such as MAC Cream Colour Base or RMS Lip2cheek in bright red, pink or orange, dabbing it gently on the apples of the cheeks will give a brightess of colour and you can brush a more neutral toned powder blush on top of elegant staying power. A bright lip, either as a full on lipstick or a stain also adds a little boost to complexion!

2. Get Oily: Face and body oils can give your parched skin that boost it needs. Use Face oil at night if you are worried about being shiny in the daytime. There are so many face oils on the market now I know it can be hard to choose. My favourites are Evolve, Sukin, and Emma Hardie Even people with oily skin can look to balancing formulas like Dr Hauschka Clarifying Day Oil.  For your body,  Almond, Olive or Avocado oils mixed with your regular body moisturiser will make a rich body balm, great for after a bath or shower. I do this year round! My current mix is Laughing Bird Shea and Cocoa butter body cream mixed with Sweet Almond and Avocado Oils that I get from And of course remember to keep eating your healthy fats: avocado, fatty fish, seeds and nuts healthy, cold pressed organic oils like Olive, Rapeseed and Sunflower.

3. Hydrate: Dehydrated skin feels tight and makes tiny lines when pulled. In the winter many people suffer from both Dry and Dehydrated skin from artificial heat and strong cold winds. Drink lots of water, green tea, clean organic herbal teas (Chamomile, mint, ginger). If your home is very dry, you can use humidifiers or place copper or Earthenware pots filled with water on your radiators. Add some drops of essential oil to the water for home fragrance if you like. Gently exfoliate your skin regularly to allow skincare to penetrate properly. Or try at home peels like BAKEL Skin Renewing Wipes  For a scrub, You can make your own formula using 1 Tbs oats and 2 Tbs Whole organic Greek Yoghurt. Mix together and smear evenly on your face. Let sit for 4-8 minutes before rinsing an applying a hydrating mask like Anne Semonin Cream Mask . The Lactic Acid removes dead skin cells while the oats soften and you can use the mask as a scrub before rinsing.

Note that dry and dehydrated skin is different, although you may have both!
