Get a Natural Facelift with these Easy Exercises

A outhful lift

We all want to look and feel younger - Fact!!!  (Ok maybe not all of us but besides the enlightened few, most of us do!) which is why there are millions of potions, lotions, fillers, facials, lifts and lipo that we can buy that offer us the promise of eternal youth.  But what about all that stucture under the skin?

We all know the benefits of exercise on our bodies but have you ever thought about it for your face?

Face Yoga or Facial exercise is not new, who knows how long it has been around, but it was definitely popularised in the 80's. But if you think about it, it TOTALLY makes sense!

The face has 43 muscles that like our bodies, can be worked and trained to remain toned and strong. Toned muscles in the face means a more lifted appearance, and combined with gentle massage, can increase blood flow to the face, giving a more youthful appearance and increasing the production of collagen and elastin, 2 key ingredients for plump and bouncy skin.

Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method

There are many people and systems offering face exercise programs, but I had the opportunity to enjoy a fabulous Skype Session with one of the leading World Face Yoga Experts: Danielle Collins ( Face Yoga Expert )  I am going to say right now that this post is not sponsored but Danielle did offer my a skype session and I was able to download the apps to give the Method a try.  I really have always been interested in natural anti-aging and face yoga as this post from last year shows.

Danielle is a wholistic teacher, trained in Yoga, Nutrition and Wellness Coaching, advocating an overall health approach to Anti Aging. Danielle was teaching yoga for years when some of her clients asked about whether she knew of exercises that could tone the face the way you tone your body, so Danielle developed her Face Yoga Method.

The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method " [...] is a combination of face exercises, face massage, face acupressure and face relaxation. It also focuses on wellbeing techniques for the mind, body and soul. [...] The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method is a natural way of looking and feeling younger and healthier with an added sense of relaxation and wellbeing. " (

Danielle walked me through some of the movements she recommended for me ( I complained of my eyelids slowly slipping south and lines in my forehead)  - Besides a series of exercises, I enjoyed the acupressure and massage as well. I was really surprised to learn from Danielle that when it comes to the face, light pats are sufficient and way better than stronger movements so that you don't stretch the skin!

So What is it?

Face Yoga is basically a series of movements where you use your fingers to apply a tiny bit of resistance to exercise certain groups of muscles. Danielle also includes forms of acupressure and light massage into the routines.

Sample Excercise: Advanced Puffer Fish

Puff both cheeks out full of air and use one hand to tighten and taught the skin around the lips to prevent lines here and to add extra resistance. Keeping the cheeks puffed out, gently tap one cheek with the free hand and then move the hand across to the other cheeks. Keep moving the hand from side to side for 30 seconds.

Benefits: this is great to lift and firm the cheeks, reduce smile lines and lift the lower face by strengthening the muscles. The tapping aspect of the exercise helps to boost the collagen, elastin and circulation to brighten and plump the skin.

When to use: great to use anytime but especially good to help the skin to look energised before a party.

Below are 2 of my favourite moves: 1 to smooth frown lines, which I actually just find relaxing, and the other to lift your neck and tone my Waddle.

How it works for me

I have been doing the exercises randomly, whenever I can find some time. My busy lifestyle does not lend itself to more than 5 minutes at a time and I rarely have the time to do a full 10 minutes. However, I have started incorporating some of the movements in my morning and evening skincare routines, taking about 5 extra minutes each time, which is a great time to incorporate a few extra movements as you apply your cleanser or moisturiser/face oil. I try to follow the instructions exactly and I have to say, I really feel the muscles working when I do the exercises properly with all the repetitions!

( I thought you guys might want to look up my nose!)

I really like the 2nd app, Face yoga for a busy life because sometimes I just click on one of the tabs, then pick an excercise and just do it then. I think as I learn the repertoire of excercises, I will just fit in what I can when I think it is needed.

Face Yoga on the Go !

To make it super practical and accessible, Danielle has created some apps so that you can do the exercises at your convenience. ( available on the App Store + Android - Just look up Danielle Collins Face Yoga on your fave Platform - again this is not sponsored) You can also order DVDs via

The Original Program "The 10 Minute Natural Facelift" uses the most effective traditional techniques and the latest research to give safe, natural anti-ageing results. The goal of the workouts is to achieve a younger, healthier appearance.  There are several components to the workouts including the  "Upper Face Workout" and " Lower Face workout" These workouts can be used as quick 10 minute solutions or can be practised together to form a complete daily anti-ageing plan.

More recently, Danielle developed "Face Yoga for your Busy Life" (The app is named Face Yoga 2 in Danielle's Section of the app store) where exercises are grouped by ‘situations’ you might be in like In The Car, and In the Morning, Before a Party, even In the Shower! You can do the sets of exercises as single little shots when you have the time or do the full flow as a longer full face workout. As she says, something is better than nothing so these little snippets are really brilliant for when you have little bits of time to grab, or an upcoming event ( Royal Wedding anyone?)

I think Danielle has tapped into the busy life of the modern woman, no matter your time commitments. Danielle sweetly has added bonus material like Body Yoga or Nutrition tips to her program which I think is a lovely little touch.

Obviously, this is no miracle solution and as Danielle says: you can only get out what you put in, but something is better than nothing. To really see results, like any form of exercise, you need to be consistent and regular because the more you do it, the more it works. Its hard to see any immediate lifting effect, but I definitely feel the positive effects of the massage and acupressure moves.

It is never too late to begin the Face Yoga regime, but I think starting in your 30s is probably a good idea, combined with a strong Skincare game, you can really keep the signs of ageing at bay and work to a more lifted and healthy appearance.  Danielle has clients of all age groups and has even done classes for the elderly and clients 80+ who all reported they felt they looked better.

So why not give it a go?
